The Methane Challenge: Strategies & Solutions for Africa's Path to Net Zero
As the world grapples with the devastating impacts of climate change, addressing methane emissions, which have a warming potential 25 times greater than CO2, is essential. The oil and gas sector is a key contributor to methane emissions, accounting for about 61% of emissions from the energy sector.
An initial assessment in selected frontier and maturing oil-producing countries in Africa reveals minimal efforts at methane management. While many African governments have committed to international initiatives on methane management, implementing and enforcing these commitments have been inadequate. Consequently, the potential impact of these initiatives remains largely untapped.
Join us on the sidelines of the Africa Climate Summit 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya, as we explore urgent actions by stakeholders (i.e. governments, companies, civil society, and academia) on methane emissions reduction in Africa’s oil and gas sector. At this event, ACEP and the Global Methane Hub seek to:
- Share the findings of the baseline report to encourage methane abatement actions among African governments and companies
- Encourage philanthropy organisations and CSOs to promote and track methane abatement actions
- Encourage DFIs to support initiatives related to methane emissions reduction in Africa’s oil and gas sector.
